The Google Business Profile Checklist Every Florida Service Business Needs
For most local service businesses, the Google Business Profile (GBP) — formerly Google My Business — drives more calls and leads than the website itself. It's also the single most under-optimized asset we see when we audit new clients. Here's the checklist we run on every account.
1. NAP Consistency, Exactly
Your business Name, Address, and Phone number need to match — character for character, including abbreviations — across your GBP, your website, and every directory you're listed on. "St" versus "Street" or a missing suite number is enough to weaken the trust signal Google uses to rank your profile.
2. Primary and Secondary Categories, Chosen Deliberately
Your primary category carries the most ranking weight of any single field on your profile. Pick the most specific accurate category — "HVAC Contractor" instead of just "Contractor," "Pool Cleaning Service" instead of "Pool Service" — and add every relevant secondary category available. Most businesses leave this half-filled out.
3. Service Areas Set to Match Where You Actually Work
If you serve five cities across Volusia or Flagler County, list all five as service areas — don't rely on your business address alone. This directly affects which searches your profile is eligible to appear in, especially the local map pack.
4. Photos, Updated Regularly
- Real job-site and completed-project photos, not stock images
- A mix of exterior, team, and work-in-progress shots
- New photos added at least monthly — profiles with recent activity outperform stale ones
5. Reviews — Volume, Recency, and Responses
Total review count matters, but recency and response rate matter just as much. A profile with 40 reviews all from two years ago signals less current activity than one with 15 reviews spread over the last three months, each with a reply. Make asking for a review part of every completed job, not an occasional afterthought.
The Fastest Win Most Businesses Skip
Google Posts — short updates, offers, or project highlights posted directly to your profile — are free, take two minutes, and directly signal activity to Google's ranking algorithm. Businesses posting weekly consistently outrank near-identical competitors who never touch this feature.
6. Q&A Section, Seeded by You
Anyone can ask a public question on your GBP — and anyone can answer it, including competitors giving bad answers. Seed the Q&A section yourself with the 5-10 questions customers actually ask (pricing range, service area, response time) and answer them accurately before someone else does it for you.
None of this is complicated, but it's rarely done completely — which is exactly why it's one of the highest-leverage, lowest-cost improvements available to a local service business. A fully optimized profile with a mediocre website will often outperform a beautiful website with a half-finished profile.
